I painted this scene over the weekend, drawn to the striking contrast between light and shadow.
The sunlit hillside bursts with warm, earthy color, while the foreground sits in cooler, muted tones.
I love how the tension between these areas creates both depth and atmosphere, capturing that quiet moment where light transforms an ordinary place into something memorable.
I applied to Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year with this self portrait.
I didn’t get through and that’s ok! I don’t think I can do any better than this so I won’t be applying again.
I then submitted my painting to a forum where so many other brilliant portraits have been rejected too and it’s really given me a boost, the feedback has been beyond amazing.
They saw my talent.

This reinforces the belief that art is so subjective, we have to keep believing in ourselves and our art and that we do have something to say, even if three judges don’t seem to think so.
